Recently I was trying to become proficient using Google’s pay per click advertising program Adwords. In doing so I discovered that the internet has basically made college completely useless at this point. I realize that this is obvious to most, but it hit me in the face when trying to learn something new.
The reason I say this is because there are a ton of tutorials online that allow you to learn marketable skills in a matter of hours. This is the kind of stuff that you would be spending thousands of dollars for at a college, and most of the time they don’t even offer this stuff.
In 2018, you can build a list of skills just from watching tutorials on the internet that would make you much more valuable to an employer in high paying fields.
For instance, if you were interested in this internet marketing stuff, it would make sense to get into a career like seo or ppc. That way you can build your experience to a professional level while building to eventually either start your own business or make websites that bring in money.
This isn’t limited to digital marketing though as you can learn anything online now. Want to make soap? There’s a tutorial for that. Want to be a video editor? There’s a tutorial.
How to learn from online tutorials
The problem I was running into with using online tutorials to learn stuff was that I would watch the video thinking that I was knowledgeable on the subject, but wouldn’t retain any of the information for long.
The way that I learn stuff and have it become second nature is by doing the activity over and over again.
I was using a 13 inch macbook and watching tutorials not realizing that I should be doing exactly what the tutorial is saying in a second window in order to retain the information. With a 13 inch screen this was pretty difficult. I attempted to make two windows half of the screen, but it was just too small. One of the problems with online tutorials is that you pretty much have to watch them full screen. The type is too small when you aren’t watching it full screen, so you can’t see what the guy is talking about.
I decided it’s time for an upgrade so I built a new pc with two monitors.
Using two monitors makes everything much easier
Every aspect of using a computer is enhanced by adding a monitor. The complete freedom I have to move stuff around is pretty great after using a 13 inch macbook for years.
The best part about it is that I can have one monitor set up for watching a full screen vid and another dedicated to doing what the guy is saying in the tutorial.
What I’m doing here is using online tutorials to build a resume of marketable skills in order to parlay everything into being better with my online money making operations. However, you could just as easily build a resume in order to take to an employer and get a very well paying job.
Digital marketing agencies are constantly looking for new talent because being able to do google adwords and seo is such a niche skill that they aren’t finding anyone who can do it.
They also pay a ton of money for these positions. You can easily learn online and with a few experiments of making websites, have the experience they are looking for to get hired.
Sounds a lot easier than going to college for 4 years and spending thousands of dollars for the same end result.
